I was fascinated by the context of our interpretation of connotation here. I do perceive "encroach" as negative only because my experiences with it are historical (land/property based). My brain also relates encroach with crouch - as in creeping towards, which also has a somewhat negative connotation. The beautiful image you chose had me thinking about the subtle difference between encroachment and overlap. I'm still thinking about that! The Ravel piece made me relax, partly I believe due to the encroachment you identified between the melodies and harmonies; there is a wonderful podcast on RadioLab that explores Ravel's Bolero as having been a result of the decline of his mental faculties.
